AUTHORS:
Autumn Stewart
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

This course encompasses pharmacotherapy for major endocrine disorders including diabetes and thyroid disease and a review of therapeutics for topics where the mainstay of treatment includes the use hormonal drug therapies including menopause, contraception, and benign prostatic hyperplasia. To gain an understanding and appreciation for the pharmacotherapy, the course also includes an overview of the etiology, pathophysiology, and clinical presentation for each disease state. Pharmacologic treatment is emphasized and includes drug classes, agents used, mechanism of action, adverse effects, and patient counseling points.

As the comprehensive management of diabetes includes prevention and treatment of common diabetes complications, recommendations for their management will be reviewed. Upon completion of this course, the student should be proficient in the application of pharmacotherapy to the disease states and topics included in the course.

The first disease state we will review is diabetes.
