How to Use This Table

Column 1—Characteristic: Specific characteristics have been listed and categorized as discussed in the chapter. There is also space at the bottom of each category to write in characteristics that are important to you.

Column 2—Location of information: This column tells you where to look to find the characteristic for each program. In some cases, more than one place is recommended. In many cases, preliminary information can be found in a residency directory or on their Web site. However, detailed information can be determined only after talking to representatives of the program, such as the RPD/preceptors/residents at the residency showcase.

Column 3—Importance of characteristic: This column provides a place to rank the importance of each characteristic to you. For example, if the institution type, complexity of patient population, and teaching certificate are important to you, these characteristics should be ranked as a four or five out of five.

Columns 4 and 5—Specific program information: The next several columns provide places for you to list specific programs for comparison. Two examples have been provided for you in the table....
