TY - CHAP M1 - Book, Section TI - Chapter 32. Enteral Nutrition A1 - Ryan, Laurajo A2 - Sutton, S. Scott Y1 - 2011 N1 - T2 - McGraw-Hill's NAPLEX® Review Guide AB - When a patient cannot ingest the necessary nutrients by eating food, either because of illness, injury, surgery, dysphagia, or changes in absorption, enteral nutrition (EN) can be used to fill the void. Enteral nutrition refers to the act of taking nutrients into the body through the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. In medical terms, we typically think of EN as supplying specialized nutrition support via tube feedings. Parenteral nutrition (see Chapter 33) provides nutrition intravenously, entirely bypassing the GI tract. In general, if the GI system is functional, it is preferable to use enteral nutrition rather than parenteral feedings.1 SN - PB - The McGraw-Hill Companies CY - New York, NY Y2 - 2024/04/19 UR - accesspharmacy.mhmedical.com/content.aspx?aid=7252794 ER -
