Leroy C. Knodel (1954-2015), the author of "Sexually Transmitted Diseases" chapter in Pharmacotherapy since its first edition in 1989, received his BS and PharmD degrees from the University of Kentucky in 1977 and 1980, respectively. He served as a faculty member for The University of Texas at Austin and the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio for more than 30 years. His chief academic responsibility was to coordinate experiential pharmacy education in the San Antonio region, a role he thoroughly embraced and enjoyed. He also directed the Drug Information Service for many years and held prominent service roles with state agencies, local health care institutions, and charitable organizations.
Leroy was an outstanding educator and tireless mentor who was universally loved by faculty, staff, students, and professional colleagues. He was a warm and caring person, known for his quick wit, great humor, and empathy. He was gifted in his ability to let those he encountered know they were important and appreciated. His contagious smile and laugh could brighten any room. Student pharmacists frequently cited him as one of the faculty members who made the biggest impact on their personal and professional development during their time in pharmacy school. Leroy touched many lives, and gave of himself unselfishly both professionally and personally. The thousands of students he helped educate and encourage during his academic career are his living legacy.
