Catherine Cone, PharmD, BCPS, is Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice and Assistant Dean of Assessment at Roseman University of Health Sciences, where she is the Assistant Dean for Assessment. Dr. Cone graduated from the University of Arizona and completed a PGY1 residency at the VA Medical Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Dr. Cone worked as an ambulatory care clinical pharmacist and later as the residency program director at the Albuquerque VA for 10 years prior to moving to academia at the University of New Mexico (UNM). At UNM, Dr. Cone was a coordinator of their second-year skills lab until she left to join Roseman University in 2015, where she is now one of the coordinators for the PPCP skills lab.

Susan Nguyen, PharmD, BCACP, is Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice and Director of Interprofessional Education–Henderson Campus at Roseman University of Health Sciences. Dr. Nguyen graduated from The Ohio State University and completed a PGY-1 residency at The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy and Clinical Partners. She currently practices as a clinical pharmacist at a free community clinic where she provides chronic disease state management and precepts student pharmacists on her ambulatory care rotation. Dr. Nguyen is currently one of the coordinators for Roseman University’s PPCP skills lab and has been in this role since 2016.

Brief Overview and Setting

Students collect and assess information from a patient they interact with during an IPPE and use that information to create a comprehensive community-based SOAP note in the classroom. A comprehensive community-based SOAP note can be added to any curriculum with any quantity of students (if there are enough graders). This lab activity should occur after students have learned to complete a comprehensive patient interview and have established with an IPPE site and preceptor. As this activity is at an intermediate level, students must have already learned to evaluate patients and have written previous SOAP notes. In its current format, this lab occurs on two campuses, with one campus having approximately 140 students and the other 85 students. It occurs in the second year of a 3-year accelerated curriculum.

Learning Objectives

  1. Demonstrate the ability to obtain a complete medical, medication, and social history from a patient.

  2. Interview patients using open-ended questions and select appropriate follow-up questions.

  3. Construct problem lists based on health and medication information collected.
