    • Notes to instructor:

      1. Recognize that there are mixed opinions about personality tests, especially regarding their value, and this may have an impact on engagement with workshop content.

      2. Acknowledge: (1) trait identification tools may promote fixed mindset. (2) segregation based on traits for the purpose of power has a history of harm.

      3. Create a context for personality traits and their use in the workplace as only one element of beautiful complexity used to understand and participate more deeply in diverse relationships.

      4. Instructor to share their personal StrengthsFinder results and experiences of how knowing coworkers’ strengths helped to improve team functioning.

    • What are traits and trait measurement tools?

      1. Traits are individual characteristics that can be observed.

        1. Examples of traits include physically observable elements like hair or skin color but also affective elements of behavior including leadership tendencies.

      2. Personality tests are trait measurement tools, an instrument designed to measure and quantify human attributes.

          1. Myers-Briggs

          2. HEXACO Personality Inventory

          3. Isenberg Entrepreneur Test

          4. CliftonStrengths

    • Traits vs Beautiful Complexity: Benefits and risks of trait identification

      1. By definition traits are specific individual characteristics and thus have limitations.

      2. Traits do not fully characterize the beautiful complexity of human beings.

      3. In-group members tend to have similar traits.

      4. Bias and segregation along specific traits is associated with a long history of harm.

      5. Trait blindness has not proven to be an effective remedy to harm that results from trait-based segregation.

      6. Trait identification has been used as an effective framework for self-reflection and self-leadership.

        1. Serve as a reflective tool to:

          1. Decide who we want to be

          2. Identify necessary change

      8. What are the limitations and risks of trait identification?

        1. Each person is uniquely complex and not easily summarized into a list of traits.

        2. Trait stratification and in-group bias can lead to segregation and bias that promotes conflict.

        3. Traits are not static as life and leadership call us to growth.
