Introduction

The purpose of this activity is to allow students to practice IV product verification. A few example cases can be found in the intravenous (IV) product verification student cases for students to become familiar with the formatting and information provided for each IV product verification case.

  1. Develop a process for checking sterile products.

  2. Identify and interpret components of an IV product label.

  3. Accurately check the preparation of IV products.

  4. Communicate resolutions for compounding errors.

  5. Verify beyond use dates of compounded products.

Sterile product compounding, how to read an IV product label, use of drug information resources, understanding of beyond use dating.

Assignment Instructions

For this assignment complete the Intravenous (IV) Product Verification Student Cases. Provide a written response to indicate the action you would take. In your written response, begin by selecting one of the following:

  • Dispense (no explanation needed)

  • Do NOT Dispense (provide explanation if selecting this)

To receive credit, if you select Do NOT Dispense you MUST provide an explanation of the action you would take. Your explanation must sufficiently explain how you would address each issue in a clear and understandable way.

Remember you can assume multiple vials of the pictured medication were used to get the volume in the syringe.
