Colleen Dula (she/her), PharmD, BCACP, is Assistant Professor–Practice at The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy. Dr. Dula received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy in 2005. She completed a post-graduate community/ambulatory care residency at The Ohio State University Clinical Partners Program in 2006. As Director of the Integrated Patient Care Laboratory (IPCaL) she is responsible for oversight of the six-semester lab curriculum including budget and resource allocation, strategic initiatives, project management, and educational technology. She is also co-coordinator and faculty instructor for the first-year IPCaL courses. Dr. Dula’s research is focused on teaching advancement and skills-based instruction.
John (JD) Bickel (he/him), PharmD, BCPS, is Assistant Professor–Practice at The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy. After receiving his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Ohio State in 2013, Dr. Bickel practiced in the rural community hospital setting. He serves as a co-coordinator for the third and fourth courses of a six-semester IPCaL sequence, where he teaches institutional and ambulatory care pharmacy skills. Dr. Bickel currently practices as an inpatient pharmacist at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, pursuing interests in medication reconciliation, sterile compounding, and precepting.
Brief Overview and Setting
The purpose of this activity is to provide students a simulated opportunity to receive, process, and prepare an institutional order for a compounded sterile preparation (CSP). This activity currently takes place in the Integrated Patient Care Laboratory course sequence at The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy in the fall semester of the second professional year of a 4-year pharmacy curriculum. Approximately 130 students are divided into four laboratory sections, each meeting weekly, with approximately 32–35 students. This activity is typically one of several activities through which each student rotates during the 3-hour lab session. Students begin sterile compounding activities at the beginning of P2 fall semester and complete this reconstitution activity after having already prepared a large-volume parenteral infusion, a small-volume parenteral “piggyback” made with an ampule, and an ophthalmic preparation. They have also received large classroom instruction on USP <797> and the principles of aseptic technique, product stability, and beyond-use dating, and other sterile compounding topics prior to this activity.
