Introduction

The purpose of this activity is to allow students to assess vaccine knowledge and skills prior to demonstrating appropriate immunization technique for a facilitator and applying knowledge to patient cases.

Learning Objectives
  1. Collect information about patients, including allergies, medications, medical conditions, and vaccine history.

  2. Assess patient history to determine need for vaccines.

  3. Create patient-specific treatment plans that include vaccines based on clinical practice guidelines and current recommendations by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) that align with the applicable state laws.

  4. Demonstrate appropriate immunization administration technique.

  5. Provide patient education on vaccines, including common adverse effects and necessary follow-up.

  6. Demonstrate ability to address vaccine hesitancy and advocate for vaccines.

Foundational Knowledge Required

Immunization administration skills, ability to navigate CDC-recommended vaccine schedules, ability to apply Pharmacists’ Patient Care Process, knowledge of pharmacotherapy and disease state guidelines related to vaccine-preventable diseases.

Students can enhance their knowledge regarding vaccines by completing the Sample Case Worksheet. Students can review the suggested resources listed on the worksheet and the ones listed above to complete the worksheet. In addition, these resources review immunization technique and immunization schedules and have students review state regulations regarding pharmacist-provided immunizations.
