Bernadette Cornelison, PharmD, MS, BCPS, is Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice at the University of Arizona College of Pharmacy. Dr. Cornelison received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Arizona. She completed a PGY1/2 Health System Administration residency at Hennepin County Medical Center and received her M.S. in Social and Administrative Pharmacy from the University of Minnesota. Dr. Cornelison co-coordinates the Self-Care Therapeutics course for first-year student pharmacists and helps coordinate the Professional Practice Management course. Her practice site is at the Banner Alvernon Family Medicine Clinic where she serves as the clinic pharmacist for 28 medical residents and 12 attending physicians. She is the PGY2 Family Practice preceptor for pharmacy residents and APPE students.

Beth Zerr, PharmD, BCACP, AE-C, is Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice at the University of Arizona College of Pharmacy. Dr. Zerr received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Minnesota. She completed a PGY1 Pharmacy Practice residency at Lake Region Health Care in Fergus Falls, Minnesota, partnered with North Dakota State University in Fargo, North Dakota. Dr. Zerr co-coordinates the Self-Care Therapeutics course for first-year student pharmacists and helps coordinate the therapeutics course and workshops for third-year student pharmacists. She provides telehealth diabetes and hypertension disease state management for Banner Health in the Phoenix metro area. She is a preceptor for PGY2 ambulatory care pharmacy residents and APPE students.

Brief Overview and Setting

The purpose of this activity is to provide students with the opportunity to practice delivering patient-centered care in a community or retail setting. Students will practice collecting, assessing, planning, and implementing self-care for patients using pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic therapies. This activity takes place in the Self-Care Therapeutics course at the University of Arizona with approximately 140 students in the first professional year of a 4-year pharmacy curriculum. Students work in groups of three (pharmacist, observer, and patient) and role-play cases that are provided to them. Upon completion of the activity, the cases are reviewed in a large group where key points are highlighted by the professor/facilitator.

Learning Objectives

  1. Apply the Pharmacists’ Patient Care Process (PPCP) to clinical activities pharmacists perform in a community or retail setting.

  2. Implement the SCHOLARMAC tool to effectively interview patients in a community or retail setting.

  3. Practice using open-ended questions designed to solicit information from patients.

  4. Determine whether a patient is a candidate for self-care therapy.

  5. Construct appropriate care plans including pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic self-care therapies utilizing information gathered from the patient interview.
