Janice Frueh, PharmD, BCPS, is Clinical Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Dr. Frueh received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree at Creighton University, School of Pharmacy and Health Professions. Dr. Frueh completed a PGY1 residency at University of Minnesota, Pharmaceutical Care Leadership Residency and became a Board-Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist in 2009. Her practice site is with the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, Department of Family and Community Medicine in Springfield, Illinois, where she provides comprehensive medication management services to patients. In addition to providing patient care, Dr. Frueh precepts Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience students in Ambulatory Care. Dr. Frueh is an instructor in several pharmacy skills lab courses at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.
Carrie Vogler, PharmD, BCPS, is Clinical Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Dr. Vogler received her PharmD from Midwestern University Chicago College of Pharmacy and completed a PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Residency at Saint Louis University Hospital and became a Board-Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist in 2011. She holds an Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor position with Southern Illinois University School of Medicine and rounds daily with the SIU Internal Medicine Hospitalist service at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, Illinois. Dr. Vogler currently co-coordinates the second year of the skills laboratory course at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.
Brief Overview and Setting
The purpose of this activity is to allow students to practice their written communication skills by interviewing a patient and documenting a patient-centered evidence-based assessment and plan. This skills activity occurs in the first half of the final professional didactic year with 80 students. This activity incorporates a variety of skills at a more complex level than what students have previously encountered. Students have had some skills development with written communication and documentation prior to this learning activity but have not had a patient case with multiple sources of patient information to incorporate into their SOAP note. All 80 students participate in this lab together and interview a standardized patient in groups of four students. The students then document their findings in a SOAP note format.
Integrate medication therapy knowledge, evidence-based medicine, and patient information to assess for medication-related problems.
Create a patient-centered plan to address medication-related problems.
Demonstrate written communication skills.
