Patient Case #1

  1. How can you assess a patient’s English proficiency?

  2. What tools can you use?

  3. What should you NOT do in this circumstance?

  4. How will you assess comprehension? What are potential risks of poor/incorrect comprehension?

  5. When have you encountered someone who isn’t able to speak English? How did that make you feel? How did you handle the situation?

  6. Have you ever traveled abroad where you weren’t able to speak the primary language? How did you communicate?

Patient Case #2

  1. Describe specific ways you can elicit this type of information from a patient during a patient consultation. What specific open-ended questions could you utilize?

  2. What is the difference between the two treatment approaches (traditional Chinese medicine versus Western medicine)?

  3. What are your concerns about the patient’s preference toward use of traditional Chinese medicine compared with Western medicine?

  4. In what ways could you inadvertently insult your patient’s beliefs, and how could you avoid this?

  1. What is the risk of taking this medication while fasting?

  2. What did/should you tell the patient?

  3. How is fasting implemented for various religions or diets, and how does that come into play when counseling patients?

Patient Case #4

  1. What important counseling points must be covered regarding HIV medication therapy specifically that is especially a concern in this patient? Explain.

  2. How would you try to convince the patient of the importance of taking his medications?

  1. What social norms do you experience every day that someone new to the country may not understand? How would you handle interactions with these patients?

  2. What other religious or personal dietary cultural considerations are you aware of?

  3. What cultural differences have you experienced when interacting with others? Do any of these have an impact on medications?

  4. What does cultural competency mean to you?

  5. Do you believe cultural competency is important? Why or why not?

  6. Explain your own culture.

  7. Compare and contrast your own culture with the culture(s) you engaged with through the personal or educational encounters.

  8. Describe how these encounters have had an impact on you or on how you view other cultures.

  9. In what ways could you or will you continue to develop your cultural competence?
