Dr. Miranda Wilhelm, PharmD, is Clinical Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville School of Pharmacy. Dr. Wilhelm received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Kansas School of Pharmacy. She completed a community pharmacy residency at B&K Prescription Shop partnered with the University of Kansas School of Pharmacy. Dr. Wilhelm is the coordinator for the P1 Pharmacy Skills Laboratory, Self-Care and Alternative Medicine required course, and Advanced Self-Care elective. She also teaches in the Immunization course. In addition to her didactic responsibilities, she precepts students during community advanced pharmacy practice experiences.
Dr. Stephanie Hunziker, PharmD, is Clinical Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice and Clinical Skills Coordinator for the Pharmacy Skills Laboratory at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville School of Pharmacy. She graduated with her Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Pharmacy degrees from St. Louis College of Pharmacy. After graduation, Dr. Hunziker completed a primary care pharmacy practice residency at the University of Mississippi Medical Center Hospitals and Clinics in Jackson, Mississippi. Dr. Hunziker joined the SIUE faculty in 2018 after spending many years in various clinical pharmacy roles in academia, managed care, drug information, and the pharmaceutical industry. She was previously on faculty at the University of Oklahoma College of Pharmacy at the OU Health Sciences Center, where she had an ambulatory care clinical practice site and taught in the pharmacy, dental, and physician associate programs. Dr. Hunziker is the Pharmacy Skills Lab coordinator and serves as a co-coordinator for the Skills Laboratory courses in all 3 years.
Brief Overview and Setting
The purpose of this activity is to allow students to practice solving a prescription drug coverage issue and recommend an appropriate course of action. Students communicate their response via an answer sheet with directed questions. This activity currently takes place in the laboratory curriculum at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville with 80 students during the third professional year of a 4-year pharmacy curriculum. Approximately 80 students divided into three laboratory sections participate in the activity. In the first (P1) and second (P2) years, students have already reviewed various aspects of prescription insurance (eg, types of health/pharmacy insurance [public or private], formulary, copay, insurance rejections) but have not combined these components with clinical knowledge.
