Evan Williams, PharmD, MBA, BCPS, BCACP, is Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice at Roseman University of Health Sciences. Dr. Williams graduated from the University of Arizona and completed a PGY1 residency at the VA Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona. Dr. Williams has a practice focus in transitions of care, teaches various didactic topics including drug information and literature evaluation, and is also one of the coordinators for the PPCP skills lab.

C. Leiana Oswald, BS, PharmD, BCGP, is Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice and Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs at Roseman University of Health Sciences. She has overseen a variety of courses including Pharmacy Communications, Self-Care, Top 200, Pharmacy Law, Clinical Nutrition, and the PPCP skills lab for first-year students. She has also developed and implemented elective courses focused on Medicare and Pharmacy as wells as Leadership and Pharmacy and has a passion for helping students develop skills that will help them become successful pharmacists.

Brief Overview and Setting

This activity follows a brief introduction to concepts in literature evaluation and may be used for beginner students that have not yet had in-depth coverage of biostatistics. This is intended to be the first exposure to literature evaluation for first-year students in a 3-year accelerated curriculum. The literature evaluation progression in the didactic curriculum at Roseman begins with this activity and is followed by observing P2 students formally presenting an article, a biostatistics course early in the P2 year, and two formal article presentations occurring in the fall and spring of the P2 year.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe reasons why a particular study was conducted in light of previous research on the topic.

  2. Describe the study design and methods of a given clinical study.

  3. Discuss how a particular study planned to minimize type 1 and type 2 error.

  4. Evaluate the components of the power calculation of a study and how that impacted the results.

  5. Report a summary table of relevant results for a given clinical trial.

  6. Identify strengths and weaknesses of a clinical trial and their impact on internal and external validity.

  7. Discuss the clinical implications of a given clinical study.

  8. Summarize and present a clinical trial in a handout format and create a PowerPoint presentation to present findings.

  9. Observe and reflect upon the performance of a P2 student giving a formal article presentation.
