Newer care models require health care teams to effectively collaborate and communicate with one another and encourage patient engagement in their own disease state management. These teams of health care professionals are also concerned with treating populations, particularly underserved populations in which social determinants of health play a role in patient outcomes. Pharmacists are among the health professionals most frequently encountered by patients; as such, rapidly evolving regulations are changing throughout the United States. Many pharmacists are involved in administering immunizations, furnishing oral contraceptive and travel medications, and/or in administration, oversight, and counseling for use of medical devices and point-of-care testing equipment. With expanded scope of practice in many states, some are managing health conditions, including collecting patient health information, assessing, planning, educating, implementing health care plans, and following-up with patients to help achieve health care goals. With more breakthroughs in technology, software, robotics, and pharmacogenomics, pharmacists’ roles will continue to advance at an accelerated pace.
