The Board of Pharmacy comprises nine members, who are appointed by the Governor and approved by the Senate.Seven members are pharmacists who represent each of the seven Congressional districts. These members must reside in the district they represent, possess a license in good standing to practice pharmacy in South Carolina, and be actively engaged in the practice of pharmacy. They shall serve terms of six years or until their successors are appointed with two term limits.Note: In 2010, a seventh Congressional District was created in South Carolina. It was determined an update in statute was not required within individual professional practice acts as the change was implemented at the agency level.Two at-large members (a lay member and a pharmacist) shall serve conterminously with the appointing governor. If no hospital pharmacist is selected to represent any of the Congressional districts, the governor shall appoint a hospital pharmacist as the pharmacist at large.South Carolina Pharmacy Practice Act. The purpose of this chapter is to promote, preserve, and protect the public health, safety, and welfare by and through the effective control and regulation of the practice of pharmacy; the licensure of pharmacists; the licensure, permitting, control, and regulation of all sites or persons, in or out of this State, that distribute, manufacture, possess, or sell drugs or devices within this State, as may be used in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of injury, illness, and disease of a patient or other individual.2Responsibilities3 of the Board of Pharmacy include the following:Regulating the practice of pharmacy.Regulating the sale and dispensing of drugs, poisons, devices.Establishing minimum specifications for facilities.Confining to prescription order a drug found to be dangerous to public if dispensed without a prescription.Seizing drugs and devices constituting imminent dangers to public health.Promulgating regulations necessary to carry out the Pharmacy Practice Act.Regulating certain personnel and facilities engaging in the practice of pharmacy.Adopt professional rules of conduct for pharmacists.Board of Pharmacy Inspections4The Board of Pharmacy has its own staff of inspectors to conduct all pharmacy inspections and investigations. The chief drug inspector is the administrator of the Board of Pharmacy who must also be a pharmacist licensed in South Carolina.Inspectors are pharmacists licensed in South Carolina that perform biennial inspections of all facilities for compliance with the Pharmacy Practice Act.
