AB In  1996,  the  federal  Health  Insurance  Portability  and  Accountability  Act  (HIPAA)  came  into  existence  and  dealt  with  protecting  patients  from  having  their  medical  information  inappropriately  disseminated,  providing  greater  security  of  an  individual’s  health  care  information.  Prior  to  this  Act,  many  of  the  states  had  relatively  stringent  health  care  privacy  laws.  As  an  example,  California  had  and  still  has  four  such  laws:
