Hemoglobinopathies are disorders affecting the structure, function, or production of hemoglobin. These conditions are usually inherited and range in severity from asymptomatic laboratory abnormalities to death in utero. Different forms may present as ineffective erythropoiesis, hemolytic anemia, erythrocytosis, cyanosis, or vasoocclusive stigmata.
