While searching for new compounds that were chemically nonsteroidal and had antiinflammatory properties, Dr. Stewart Adams filed a patent for “Antiinflammatory Agents” in 1961. One of the compounds in this list was 2-(4-isobutylphenyl) propionic acid, which today we call ibuprofen. This discovery created a new class of drugs designated as nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).36 Ibuprofen was initially marketed in the United Kingdom in 1969 and was introduced to the US market in 1974. Ibuprofen became available without a prescription in the United States in 1984.
